"Alternative fuel derived from waste plastic is high on the agenda of scientists and environmentalists looking to take plastic and ensure it does not take up land fills or being dumped in the ocean. The objective of earthnform is to shed light on the world’s most daunting environmental problem of plastic waste, while producing functional products cast from found plastic. We give plastic and polystyrene packaging material a second chance, by turning it into art."

The brainchild of two Los Angeles natives, earthnform porcelain combines aesthetics with function, art with utility. Each piece carries a name that reflects the form:

Running until March 4, the Lois Lambert Gallery presents Gordon Chandler "Enigmatic & Earnest", Stephen Freedman "Mnemonics", and Dovrat Amsily-Barak "The Kingdom". Take a look at some photos from the opening reception.

Gordon Chandler's career spans more than 30 years, most notably for his reclaimed metal furniture and expressionistic animal sculptures. "Enigmatic & Earnest" focuses on the essence of Chandler's artistic principle, finding beauty in the overlooked and everyday objects that surround us.

Stephen Freedman's collection of ceramic sculptures in "Mnemonics" are a departure from the formalistic vessel-based sculpture he created during his time in Los Angeles. Models utilizing the elemental vessel in various forms from simple to complex evolved into his current sculptural incarnation in which multiple vessels are deconstructed and reassembled.

Israeli artist Dovrat Amsily-Barak makes her west coast debut with a collection of photographs entitled "The Kingdom". Fueled by a curiosity of sacred nun communities in Israel, the artist uncovers the mystery surrounding their lifestyle, resulting in an intimate collaboration between artist and subject.

Last weekend we celebrated the opening of our latest exhibition, Agelio Batle's "Almost Diamonds". It was an amazing night spent listening to some great music by our friend Charlie Domingo and munching on yummy food from DOSAtruck.

Agelio Batle, "Almost Diamonds"

Lois Lambert Gallery is proud to present our upcoming show,

Almost Diamonds, an exhibition of new paintings by Agelio Batle.

The title Almost Diamonds is a metaphor

for the people in their unformed state,

almost solid but not quite there. Graphite

and diamond are chemically identical but

differ in their crystal structure. The graphite

comes from trees that died millions of years

ago and the stumps on the shoulders of the

man and branches are a reminder to honor

the origin of the material. Batle’s use of red,
his first use of color in 25 years,

alludes to blood being the source of life.

Sik Chang/Jang, Kang, Woo Opening Reception

Last weekend we celebrated the opening of our latest exhibitions, Sik Chang: Transposed Images and Jang, Kang, Woo: Selected Works. It was a great night, filled with fantastic performances, by the Little Angels Chorale and the UCLA Hanoolim Poongmul drummers, as well as tasty bites courtesy of the always delicious Calbi food truck. Hopefully you were able to join us, but if not you can always peruse our Facebook photo album to get a glimpse of all the fun.

Both shows run until September 4, so we hope to see you soon!

Last March we were so excited to be showing the work of our friend Gali Rotstein here at the Lois Lambert Gallery. Her show, "Flying Crooked", included beautiful, multi-layered pieces created using a variety of techniques including painting, cutting and drawing.

Recently Gali was interviewed for ARTSANDCULTURESTUFF, an online magazine which is part of Convozine. Convozine is a growing community publishing platform that brings together users who want to create their own online magazines to share interesting content such as images and articles.

Google Art Project

Imagine spending an afternoon, strolling through the wide halls of the Tate Britain in London. Then stop by the Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid for a glimpse of the great works of Picasso and Dalí. When you've had your fill of the Spanish masters, why not head to the MoMA in New York City to finish your art excursion. While this might seem like an ambitious endeavor, with the help of Google's Art Project, you can indeed visit these amazing art galleries, and many others, in just one afternoon from the comfort of your own home.

Thanks to the power of technology, Google has been able to provide users with a unique view of the world's greatest art museums. Some of the Art Project's amazing functions include:

Access to thousands of detailed, high-resolution images of pieces from the featured museums
A "Create an Art Collection" option to gather your favorite artwork images into one personalized collection that can be shared with family and friends
An indoor Street View-esque function to navigate through and explore each gallery as if you were right there

While it might not exactly capture the thrill of actually visiting these museums, the Google Art Project might just save you a bundle on airfare for your next vacation.

Gallery Store new item: Unscene Artists

Each piece in this limited edition is numbered and initialed on the back by the Artist. It is part of a numbered series entitled Recession Art- created by both well-known and emerging artists generally working in the Los Angeles area. Some prints will include an original poem of prose, which will also be initialed by the author or artist. In the spirit of fun and the opportunity, to give voice to artists during these less-abundant times, the identity of the Artist will be released at the end of the series in April, 2012. At that time, match the initials and discover the name and a brief biography of the Artist who created your piece. Enjoy your lovely masterpiece!

Artist Update: Joanna Bielski

Last week was the opening reception for Joanna Bielski's "Gravity Defied", now showing at the Lois Lambert Gallery until July 10.

Joanna's recent work is inspired by the contradictions of gravity - the downward, sinking sensation that keeps us happily grounded and also drives us to repel its repressive force in physical, psychological, and spiritual ways. She explores the relationship of the human body to the constraints of gravity, from contorted limbs splayed across the canvas fighting their spatial limitations to resting forms that have gently succumbed to the pull of the earth.

Center of Gravity: Special music event at the Lois Lambert Gallery

This Friday, May 13, we will be hosting a very special free music event here at the Lois Lambert Gallery as part of a preview to the opening of Joanna Bielski's "Gravity Defied". Steve Stajich, a writer and musician, will perform "Center of Gravity", a seriocomic song cycle he created in response to six of Joanna's paintings. The performance will also feature actors Ruth Rudnick and Wade Kelley.

According to Steve, "It's not too far off to say that we'll try to make the paintings sing, and the voices might be those of characters in the paintings or characters related to the paintings."

This Friday's performance will begin at 8pm and will last approximately one hour. Get here early as seating is limited!

The opening reception for Joanna Bielski's "Gravity Defied" is this Saturday, May 14, from 6-9pm.

In honor of Earth Day, we bring you two incredible videos created by a Gallery of Functional Art artist, Christy Oates. Christy uses eco-friendly materials while specializing in laser cut veneer marquetry and Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) technologies in wood.

Stop by to check out her piece "Wallpaper Chair" which transforms from a flat wall piece into a functional chair. Watch the video below to see how it was created.

We're excited to introduce one of the newest additions to Our Gallery Store: the bkr bottle. It's a simple glass bottle with a silicone cover, designed to curb waste caused by using plastic bottles and prevent the ingestion of chemicals that other bottles may contain.

Bergamot Transit Village back to square one

Santa Monica has long been known as a great city, not only for its proximity to the Pacific, but also for its cultural impact. We've always been proud to be part of the city, especially Bergamot Station, the home of the Lois Lambert Gallery, Gallery of Functional Art and Our Gallery Store. Over the years Bergamot and the surrounding area has undergone several makeovers, and with the upcoming Expo Line, a future light rail line part of the Los Angeles County Metro Rail System, developers from all over are looking to redesign Bergamot Station. Recently one such proposed project to re-develop the area neighboring Bergamot came before the city council, only to be turned down due to widespread disapproval from the city's residents.

The proposal, called the "Bergamot Village Transit project", outlined a mixed-use development that, if approved, would have reached up to eight stories and included almost 2000 parking spaces. It's not surprising that residents opposed the idea, describing it as "too tall, too dense and...a beacon of intensified congestion to an already overburdened traffic corridor on Olympic Boulevard."

As a former and now future site of a public transit station, Bergamot will most likely go through a lot of changes, and rightfully so as L.A. County residents continue to embrace public transportation. We're incredibly excited to see how the area grows, and hopefully any future proposals can find a balance between the demands of a growing industry and the demands of the city's residents.

Kenneth Cobonpue's bamboo concept car

Last week, one of Our Gallery Store's favorite designers, Kenneth Cobonpue was featured on GreenMuze for an incredible new eco-friendly car he designed. Named for its avian shape, the Phoenix car is built with mostly biodegradable and recyclable materials such as bamboo, rattan, steel and carbon fiber. The car, which includes space on the sides for windows and room in the back for an engine, was recently on display at the Imagination and Innovation exhibit in Via Tortona in Milan, Italy.

Kenneth is an award-winning designer, known primarily for his furniture designs -- two of his chairs (right) are featured in Our Gallery Store. His work combines aesthetic beauty with comfort and functionality, and through the years he has incorporated organic materials and innovative techniques to provide new alternatives to modern Western design.

Although Kenneth's car design is meant to be a concept and there are no current plans for production, here's hoping that the same forward thinking, innovative design and environmental concern go into the cars we will drive in the near future.

Artist Update: Gali Rotstein

Last week we held an opening reception for artist Gali Rotstein's new show "Flying Crooked", now showing at the Lois Lambert Gallery.

Gali, whose talents range from theater arts to ceramics to digital art and photography, has compiled a fantastic collection of her paintings, inspired by the Robert Graves poem of the same name:

The butterfly, the cabbage white,
(His honest idiocy of flight)
Will never now, it is too late,
Master the art of flying straight,
Yet has — who knows so well as I? —
A just sense of how not to fly:
He lurches here and here by guess
And God and hope and hopelessness.
Even the aerobatic swift
Has not his flying-crooked gift.

Itty Bitty Art Show!

On March 6th, 2011 the Itty Bitty Art Sale will feature original postcard-sized art, each to be sold for $40 on a first-come, first-served basis. The work is unsigned on the front, so no one knows the artists’ identity until it is purchased and the name is revealed on the back.

Postcards have been donated by a wide variety of artists and celebrities including Marilyn Minter, Guillermo Del Toro,
Conan O'Brian, Christopher Guest, Jamie Lee Curtis, and more. Proceeds benefit P.S.#1 Pluralistic School and community projects.

Artist Update: Dave Lovejoy

If you haven't been to the gallery lately, then you should definitely take a look at this slideshow, put together by photographer Laura Chau. It showcases work created by Dave Lovejoy, one of two amazing artists currently showing at Lois Lambert Gallery.

Dave Lovejoy, one of Art in California magazine's "Art Stars of California", has been a working artist since the 1980s and has exhibited in galleries throughout California, Hawaii and Oregon, as well as in shows abroad. Trained as a ceramicist, Dave uses his training to create mixed media pieces using both handmade and repurposed materials.
